Pantheon

This breathtaking temple hidden among the surrounding buildings is the best preserved monument from ancient Rome times. The temple allegedly lies in the spot of Romulus' accession to heaven. (Romulus is the legendary founder of Rome.) This is also the reason why there is a round opening in the top of the temple's dome (known as Okulus or Eye). As the legend has it it never rains through the Eye. The dome is supported by six richly decorated Corinthian columns. The decorative column heads were sculptured out of Egyptian granite.
